Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it. Those who are not alive during the release of a product are doomed to talk about it. Nintendo released the Power Glove over two decades ago and it was so well received that it eventually spawned a meme reflecting its renowned acclaim. All joking aside, the Power Glove was definitely a little too ahead of its time; the controls were clunky, inaccurate, and apparently game enthusiasts weren’t quite ready to incubate their hands with a cyborg hand vac.
Based on the releases of technologies such as Leap Motion and Myo, we’re moving closer to a world where our arms and hands are the standard input devices for our digital world. We’ve advanced to the point where a good idea appears to be supported by good execution. Let the Power Glove serve as a reminder of how far we’ve come, but also as a lesson of how “the next big thing” sometimes becomes the next big laugh.
